Azumaen is one of Unzen's loveliest onsen ryokans, overlooking Oshidori Lake for spectacular sunset views. Rooms do not have their own private onsen baths but the public baths make up for this, and unlike many Japanese onsen, the waters here aren't scaldingly hot, making it a great introduction for newcomers.
Azumaen was a choice destination for the Prince of Japan, and the higher end rooms are stunning -- if you can splurge, this is a great place to do so. Food verges on the sublime, with seasonal "kaiseki" ryouri that often includes hand-selected items from local markets or even the nearby hills. For reservations, visit www.azumaen.com -- while the website currently does not offer English, they have friendly English-speaking staff who will do their best to make your stay spectacular.
