Shimoda Onsen's iconic foot bath.

Shimoda Onsen, set on the western shore of the remote Amakusa island chain (part of Kumamoto Prefecture), seems as peaceful and idyllic as a simple town can be.  There are foot baths, hot, iron rich waters, and a host of pretty sight-seeing in the nearby coastline and mountains.  If you just want a quiet spot to escape from it all, look no further.  If you need nightlife, glitz, or glamour, you're in about the wrongest spot you can possibly be.

Getting here can be done by bus, but really requires a car for any decent sightseeing and daily activities.  You can arrive on Amakusa either by the bridge or by ferry, but once here, plan on lengthy waits for the public transport.
